Writing top-up: how show rather than tell
Date: start whenever it suits you
Show, don’t tell. It’s one of the most oft-repeated pieces of writing advice, yet it is frequently misunderstood. To paraphrase Russian playwright Anton Chekhov, “Don’t tell me the moon is shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.”
But how exactly do you do that? What does it mean to show, rather than tell? Are there ever exceptions to the rule?
The tutorial consists of:
- Pertinent notes from Jo-Anne Richards and Richard Beynon.
- A video recording of our live presentation of the seminar.
- A short writing exercise designed to entrench the skill. You can also choose to adapt the exercise to the project you’re working on.
- If you selected the feedback option you’ll receive personalized written feedback on your exercise from either Jo-Anne or Richard
